Starting September 21, the 3rd annual San Diego Design Week (SDDW) kicks off across the San Diego/Tijuana region. Presented by Mingei International Museum, San Diego Design Week brings together designers, performers, chefs, and other creatives from across San Diego-Tijuana to celebrate design in all forms. From September 21 to September 25, attendees have the opportunity to meet some of the biggest local names in design, try out local cuisine and explore local, interactive exhibits across the bi-national region.

Events include a walking tour of Tijuana’s top design hot spots, studio tours, exclusive exhibits, mezcal tasting and chances to meet fashion designer Claudia Biezunski-Rodriguez Hues, pastry chefs Arely Chavez and Letha Gimble, Brazilian-American artist Yomar Agusto, representatives of Mingei International Museum and other local artists across disciplines and cultures. Registration for this year’s event will go live on August 29, 2022.

San Diego Design Week is a member of World Design Weeks, a network that includes Design Weeks across the world. San Diego and Tijuana were also named World Design Capital 2024, the first binational recognition of its kind, for their commitment to human-centered design and a long legacy of cross-border collaboration. This year’s San Diego Design Week is a cross-border opportunity for visitors to see how these two cities’ histories influence local design.

Design, at its core, is collaborative, interconnected, experimental and holds the potential to shift perspectives and imagine new possibilities. San Diego Design Week and other international World Design Weeks seek to connect people to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing and understanding of what we hold in common. Inspiration knows no borders, whether between people, communities or countries. And the simplest detail can change the world.

Events held throughout San Diego Design Week include:

  • Opening Night at Mingei, Sept. 21, 7 p.m.: Kick off the third annual San Diego Design Week at the Mingei Museum. Enjoy drinks, cocktails and snacks while mingling with SDDW advisors and presenters. $35.
  • Toying with Design: A Mingei International Museum Special Exhibition, all week: Co-curated by Patricia Cué, Creative Director at Mingei International Museum, and Susan Merritt, Professor Emerita of the School of Art and Design at San Diego State University, this exhibition explores how architects and designers come together to craft toy-like, utilitarian objects. Sometimes paired with unique craft pieces from Mingei’s collection, this exhibit seeks to reveal universal symbols that span generations and cultures, while exposing stylistic trends. Included with museum admission.
  • International Fashion Show: Diversity Through Design by International Rescue Committee Small Business Development Center, Sept. 24, 11:30 a.m.: Features work from designers from across the globe, including Togo, Uganda, Mexico, Afghanistan and Iraq who use their backgrounds as immigrants and refugees to inspire their designs.
  • Open Studio by FRAGMENTO, Sept. 24-25: Fragmento, an interdisciplinary studio in Tijuana, Baja California, will open its doors for a special exhibit focused on the natural and material elements that leave a mark on the spaces and everyday objects we live with.

“San Diego Design Week opens the door for creatives from all experience levels and disciplines to celebrate our bi-national community,” said Cristina Godinez, Program Director at San Diego Design Week and Corporate and Community Liaison at Mingei International Museum. “This event is an opportunity for our region to show off what makes us innovative and inspiring – the people.”

“San Diego Design Week is a catalyst for collaboration in our San Diego/Tijuana region,” said Patricia Cué, Founding Committee Member of San Diego Design Week and Creative Director of Mingei International Museum. “It sparks new ideas and connections, making our cross-border creative community an international destination for designers and creatives from all design disciplines.”
